Emily Brontë "Wuthering Heights" [Charlotte]
Wuthering Heights
During the October holidays, I read Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights. Her
first and only work, from its first publication in 1847,it has never stopped
shaping English literature.
The tale recounts Heathcliff’s vengeance
upon the Earnshaw family. Mocked by Catherine, the woman he loves, because of
his social status; the bohemian boy vanishes for three years. Against all odds,
he not only comes back, he is now a wealthy fellow. With hatred engraved into
his heart, Heathcliff brings misery upon those he wishes to destroy, slowly
submerging them into despair.
Let me say… Wuthering Heights is
something. I think it has become my favorite book of the English language. How
to start? The story is compelling, with such memorable and distinct characters.
None of them are all black nor all white, only nuances. The scenery is
gorgeous, drawing you among the misty, marshy moors. The wind howls within your
ears, the rhythm of each page. This classic is never a bore! Offering a very
pleasant read, which can definitely be a nice change from some other classics,
which can be a pain to read, therefore getting on your nerves.
I have not been the only one to be very
fond of this book, as Kate Bush created her own Wuthering Heights https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1pMMIe4hb4
, an homage and retelling of Brontë’s work, and it is the song that started
her career. Did I mention this to get you to listen to one of my favorite
songs? Hmmm…Maybe.
To wrap up my never-ending praise, I
recommend this book. In fact, someone in my family will ~mysteriously~ receive
it for Christmas. It is the perfect story to spark up your interest in reading,
and similarly to Catherine never parting with Heathcliff, Wuthering Heights
will never part you…
