Agatha Christie, "The Mysterious Mr Quinn" (Ella)

Today I will be sharing my honest opinion about a book I recently read: «The Mysterious Mr Quinn» by Agatha Christie which was published in 1930.

This book is basically divided in 12 short stories. Throughout every one of them we can witness the same two characters meeting each other and solving mysteries together. The book is narrated by one of them: old Mr Satterthwaite. The other one is called Harley Quinn and though he is in every story, strangely enough, we know very few about him...

At first I didn’t expect this book to be a short story collection so I was a bit confused at the beginning. That didn’t prevent me from loving it though! Every story had a different style and context, and various characters. The ending of the stories are also always the same : Mr Satterthwaite finishes by solving the mystery or finding the missing piece in the story with the help of Mr Quinn.

It took me a bit of time to truly get into the book but after two or three chapters (once I got the book’s style and pattern) I couldn’t put the book down!I usually prefer novels to short stories but I particularly liked this one for several reasons.

First of all, I liked the feeling of comfort or a kind of reassurance reading those stories. That feeling came from the fact that I knew I would inevitably find the two same characters and that the story would always (whatever the plot) finish by Mr Satterthwaite cracking the case with the help of his friend Mr Quinn. An other reason I appreciated this book is that every story was different and unlike other short story collections I felt various emotions reading the stories. The plots were quite original and in each one was a more or less dramatic twist. The third reason I am recommending this book is that the general atmosphere feels very cozy. Most of the stories took place in England which is, in my opinion, a very welcoming and warm place to go. I also love the way the book is written; it always really corresponds to the context and mood of the story.

To conclude this review, I really recommend you to read or at least take a closer look at this book. I think it is a book that can suit all ages ; you also do not have to like a particular book gender to love those stories. The Mysterious Mr Quinn review
