Dan Brown "Digital Fortress" (Mikaël)

Book Club Review: Digital Fortress, Dan Brown

Digital Fortress is a novel written by Dan Brown, who is the author who wrote the famous novel: The Da Vinci Code (there is also a book review on this novel if you are interested). Published in 1998, the novel is about cryptography and cybersecurity.

Throughout the book, we follow the journey of a cryptographer employed by the National Security Agency (NSA): Susan Fletcher. She tries to save the data of American citizens, which is threatened by a program called Digital Fortress. Her husband, David, tries to help her; he searches for a password that has been lost in Spain, in Seville. The couple will do its best to prevent the database from being leaked. However, life’s not easy; therefore, on their way to their goal, Susan and David will encounter many obstacles, betrayals and even murders!

This novel may not be the most famous one Dan Brown has written; it is actually the first one he had written. However, I enjoyed the book as it always has action going, which makes it an exciting read. In order to create this feeling, the writer used cliffhangers and created suspense through the whole book until the very last page, which I really appreciated.

Another aspect of the book that kept me interested is the fact that the chapters of the book are very short; therefore, in my opinion, it really gives the reader the impression of reading fast, and not staying on the same chapter for hours and hours.

Finally, I loved the main themes of the book. The presence of questions on cybersecurity and government surveillance made me really question myself about our society. Dan Brown’s writing also made me question the safety of our own personal information, how it is stored and the fact it can represent an obstruction to civil rights.

One thing I regret about the book is its originality. The book actually is not original at all. You can find many books that have an almost identical story-line; and, you can probably even find books that are better.

I would recommend this book to someone who has never really read this type of techno-thriller book; however, if someone who has read a lot of books of action, reads this novel, it might seem deceiving and not very entertaining.

If you are interested, you can find the book here!
