John Green "Looking for Alaska" (Clara M)
LOOKING FOR ALASKA
by John Green
Looking for Alaska was written by John Green and published on March 3rd, 2005.It talks about a young man called Miles Halter who’s infatuated by famous celebrities last words. This novel was the winner of the Michael L. Printz Award in 2006 and was a New York times Best Seller. Looking for Alaska was also made into a TV mini-series in 2019. In this review, I will provide you with 3 reasons why you should read the book which are also the 3 main reasons I liked. I will also summarize the main plot of the book and explain to you why I recommend it to you.
Miles decided on going to a boarding school after reading the biography of François Rabelais where his last words were stated “I go to seek a Great Perhaps”. He then started his journey by meeting Chip ‘the colonel’ and was introduced to Alaska afterwards. We get to experience the journey with him: The before and after.
I liked this book for various reasons. The first reason was its plot. The plot was very intriguing and at times unexpected. The book is full of easter eggs that you would be able to catch once you re-read it. I enjoyed the fact that John Green used suspense with the usage of the before and after. The novel starts 220 days before the novels ends, and I really enjoyed the countdown as it made me want to know what would happen.
The second reason why I preferred reading this novel is because I enjoyed how John Green portrayed the characters differently. For example, Alaska always stayed a mystery. We never really learned about her backstory up until near the end. Even then we only see a tiny glimpse into the life of Alaska. On the other hand, Chip’s character gets dived into more we get to learn more about his life while reading this novel.
The third and last reason is that I liked the ending because we can perceive it however, we want and because the ending is not explained we don’t get the answer to the question Alaska asked. After giving this matter some thought, I believe that this novel is very much worth the read. It was a captivating read that made me look at the world with a different point of view and it made me want to figure out why things happened the way they did, which helps me relate to Miles in many ways for that reason I highly recommend it. How will you get out of the Labyrinth?
