Neil Gaiman : Neverwhere

Released in 1996, the book Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman had huge success and was even made into a film, which did not however have as much fame.

Richard Mayhew is a perfectly normal person, with a perfectly normal job, living a perfectly normal life in London. Richard is suddenly pulled into a whole new world when he tries to help a near dead girl on the street. He brings her home and is immediately brought into acquaintance with two very unsavoury killers.

He finds that there is a whole new world underneath London : London Below, its’ existence unknown and ignored by the world above. To be able to stay alive, Richard must accompany a group of arguably crazy individuals who are taking on a suicidal quest which means certain death, but the alternative is worse because staying alone in an unknown hostile environment means death in a few hours.

Danger lurks in every corner and angels, talking rats and sewer people are just normal things in the life of someone in London Below.

Personally I felt that the book was extremely well written and very interesting, but at times I felt like the author made choices that might seem bizarre and that he did not give any explanation for his choices, which meant that the reader just had to go along with the story regardless of the fact that it might not make sense for the moment. I would therefore recomend this book to people who like reading and do so often. I would not recommend this book to anyone who gets queasy over certain gore, because although it does not happen all throughout the book, it is certainly a factor that is present and noticeable.

All in all I greatly enjoyed the book as it was a very different style of writing and a very original idea for a book.
